Game Rules

To ensure consistency and competitive integrity, all NCHBC tournaments and events adhere to the official National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Rules, unless otherwise noted in the specific sections below.

Team Responsibilities & Score Reporting

Teams are defined by their position on the bracket/schedule:

Home Team (Top of Bracket/First Listed)

  • Wears light color uniforms.
  • Provides the official game ball.
  • Responsible for the Official Book (Score Sheet).
  • Text scores to 417-203-7447 immediately after the game.

Away Team (Bottom of Bracket/Second Listed)

  • Wears dark color uniforms.
  • Responsible for the Official Clock/Scoreboard.
  • Text scores to 417-203-7447 immediately after the game.

Both Teams Must:

  • Bring both light and dark uniforms in case the opponent has an unforeseen issue.
  • Provide your own warm-up basketballs.

Game Length & Timing

  • 10u, 12u, 14u: Six (6) minute Quarters
  • 16u: Seven (7) minute Quarters
  • 18u: Eight (8) minute Quarters

Time Outs: Five (5) per game (three full and two :30s), plus one (1) additional per overtime period.

Halftime:

  • Halftime is four (4) minutes long.
  • Teams may shoot during the halftime of the game before their game IF their team is in uniform and the teams playing are not using the court.
  • Under no circumstances should fans or children be shooting during any halftime period.

Special Rules & Equipment

  • Basketball Size: Boys 12u-18u use boys’ basketballs. Boys 10u and all Girls use a 28.5 size basketball.
  • Goal Height: All age groups play on 10-foot goals.
  • Running Clock: If a lead is greater than 30 points in the 4th quarter, a running clock will be used until the lead drops below 30. Teams are highly discouraged from full-court pressing with a 30-point lead.

Pressing Rules (10u & 12u)

  • 12u: Pressing is permitted until there is a 20-point lead.
  • 10u: Pressing is permitted until there is a 15-point lead.

Officials & Conduct

  • Final Rulings: Referee rulings during a game are final. The NCHBC will not overrule an official decision during or after a game.
  • Conduct: Coaches, players, fans, and parents are not to approach referees after the game. Adherence to sportsmanship rules is expected from everyone.
