March 2nd, 2026-
With only 14 days left until tip-off in Springfield, MO, the Bracketology Team is hard at work!
We know everyone is anxiously awaiting their Division placements and official seeds. While we are still days away from releasing any actual divisional divisions (and official seeding/selection releases are not scheduled to begin posting until Tuesday, March 10th), we want to pull back the curtain today and show you exactly HOW we build the Nationals Brackets.
Here is the step-by-step formula we use to seed Division I for all applicable age groups.
𧱠THE BLUEPRINT: The 32-Team Format & Gold Ball Divisions: Division I & II
For our largest Division I/II age groups, such as Boys 18u, B16u, B14u, & B12u, and Girls 18u, we use a 32-team bracket structure (even if an age group has 28 teams, as in G18u this year, we still use the 32-team framework).
It is important to understand that in these Division I & Division IIΒ 32-team formats, there are FOUR distinct Gold Ball Divisions: 8A, 7A, 6A, and 5A. In these formats, teams that win their opening game will move to Division I (Sweet 16), and losing teams will move to Division II.
This means there is not just one overall “#1 Seed.” Instead, the 32 teams are divided across these four 8-team brackets.
VERY IMPORTANT: The 16 teams that win their opening game move to Division I, the 16 teams that lose their opening game move to Division II.
- Each Gold Ball Division (8A, 7A, 6A, 5A) features its own #1 Seed, #2 Seed, #3 Seed, and so on.
- In the opening round of each bracket, the matchups follow a standard format: 1v8, 2v7, 3v6, and 4v5.
- Wednesday is Gold Ball Day! The Championship game for all four of these brackets (8A, 7A, 6A, & 5A) will be played on Wednesday.
- The Gold Ball Showdown Series: The four teams that win their Gold Ball on Wednesday will advance to the ultimate showdown, which begins on Thursday.
- In the Showdown Series semi-finals, the 8A Champion will play the 5A Champion, and the 7A Champion will play the 6A Champion.
- Friday, the Undisputed National Championship is played to crown the best of the best in HomeSchool Basketball for your age group!
- The top 4 seeds of each Gold Ball Class are the D1 seeds, and the 5-8 seeds in each class are the D2 seeds. The teams will play out the D1/D2 Qualifier Games on Monday of Nationals in our largest age groups.
π STEP 1: Rewarding the Regional Champions
Knowing that we need four #1 Seeds for those four brackets, we always start at the very top.
- The Top 3: The three Regional Champions are immediately locked in as the top three #1 Seeds as per our Regional Guarantee. (Note: There is room for exception in smaller age groups that did not have a Regional Championship, such as Heartland G16u).
- The 4th Spot: We then bring in the Regional Runner-Ups to determine who earns the final #1 Seed.
- The Trickle Down: For an age group like B18u or G18u, pulling one Runner-Up to the 1-line almost always leaves two remaining Regional Runner-Ups to claim the first two #2 Seed spots.
βοΈ STEP 2: The “Loss to the Champion” Rule
We look closely at Regional results, but we understand that tournament brackets can sometimes be “unlucky” based on where teams were seeded.
If your team’s ONLY loss at Regionals was to the eventual Regional Champion, our committee takes a much deeper look at your placement:
- The Semi-Final Exit: If you lost to the Champion in the semi-finals, we reserve the right to evaluate your “body of work” against the team that officially placed 2nd.
- The 5th Place Finisher: If you finished 5th but your only loss was to the Champion, we will evaluate your team against the region’s 3rd-place finisher.
- The 9th Place Finisher: Even if a team finishes 9th, if their only loss was a narrow one to the eventual Champion in the opening rounds, we review those cases closely to ensure that team isn’t unfairly penalized in the National rankings.
In these specific cases, the committee moves beyond the trophy count and compares the season’s total body of work. We look specifically at regular-season games against homeschool opponents played prior to our February 1st Seeding Deadline. This allows a team that suffered an early “unlucky” draw/loss to still be considered among the top teams in their region for National seeding.
π STEP 3: The Golden Rule (Unique Matchups > Perfect Math)
Once the top three overall Regional Champions are locked in, Unique Matchups take over as the primary driver of our seeding process. To put this in perspective: while the top 10% of the field is seeded “straight up” based on rank, nearly 90% of the bracket is seeded specifically to prioritize fresh competition.
Our ultimate goal is for your players to face teams they haven’t seen all year. To protect the integrity of the tournament experience, we will move teams up or down a seed line if it avoids a regular-season or Regional rematch.
Our Unique Matchup Standards:
-
No Regional Finals Rematches: We intentionally separate Regional Champions and their Runner-Ups so they cannot meet again until Championship Friday.
-
Example: Since the 8A Champion plays the 5A Champion in the Showdown Series, if a Regional Champ is the #1 seed in 8A, their Runner-Up will NOT be placed as a #1 or #2 seed in the 5A bracket, etc.
-
- Regional Separation: We work tirelessly to keep teams that played each other at Regionals out of the same Nationals Gold Ball Class bracket entirely.
- The “3-Game” Rule: If two teams played each other three or more times before the Feb 1st deadline, we strive to keep them in completely different Nationals Gold Ball Class brackets.
- The “1-Game” Rule: If teams played more than once during the regular season, we aim to avoid a matchup until at least the third game of Nationals.
The Bottom Line: Providing your players with fresh, exciting, and unique competition is a higher priority for us than adhering to a strict 1-through-32 mathematical list.
β³ WHAT IS NEXT?
Our team is actively applying this formula to all 414 teams attending Nationals.
